The sophomore release from Bruce Springsteen lives up to all the promise and brilliance foreshadowed on "Greetings From Asbury Park". A working class kid from Freehold, New Jersey presents a panorama of city life with some of the most stunningly original street poetry ever set to music. Each song is populated with characters (Spanish Johnny, Puerto Rican Jane, Rosalita, Kitty, Sandy, Madam Marie, Billy) and stories so fully realized that they are indelibly stamped into your consciousness forever. These songs are bursting at the seams with the energy of youth when anything seems possible. Springsteen''s transcendent lyrics transform grimy urban street scenes into universal visions of hope and beauty. Each song seems a living thing, using a wide variety of intrumentation to paint vivid imagery in your mind. You can feel the heat and dust rising from the street during "The E Street Shuffle"(dig the funky guitar and brass). Hear the boardwalk sounds and young hearts beating in the romance of "4th of July Asbury Park (Sandy)" (courtesy of Dan Federici''s Accordion). A stinging guitar solo kicks off the cool rock/jazz of "Kitty''s Back" (Powerful guitar and organ solos take things to a fever pitch). Side two is my favorite of any album ever released! Beginning with the gorgeous cinema verite of "Incident on 57th Street" through the pull-out-all-the-stops, dream-come-true, redemption party that is "Rosalita" and ending with the stunning "New York Serenade" featuring strings and sensational piano by David Sancious. "Born to Run" would cement Springsteen''s status as one of rock music''s greatest writers but he has never equalled the incredible poetry, narratives and arrangements found on this release. The remastered sound is so crisp and clean it''s like hearing these songs for the first time!

The best version of the E Street Band, IMHO. Springsteen''s writing classics, and the band is lending them amazing support. From the opening "The E Street Shuffle", to the closer, "New York City Serenade," it''s all killer, not a bit of filler. The sense of unbridled joy is catching -- Bruce would never sound this joyful again. By the time of the next release (Born To Run), Vini Lopez and David Sancious would both be gone, Springsteen would find himself under the wing of Jon Landau, and, seemingly, he''d begun to believe the hype. This one, however, has never let me down, and it has remained in the Top 5 of my Desert Island Disc list for close to a half-century. Very highly recommended.

The bosses best. I lived in the circuit in Asbury for years after this album. Both the hope and the hopeless are in here. I lived across the street from where his band used to practice when they first started, so I may be a bit biased twards a local boy but this is his signature album and his best.. Just was down there, Madam Maries gone and most of the rest of the place has been torn down and replaced by parking lots. The place I lived is just a sidewalk and a bare lot. The Stone Pony Still Stands. So the Icon remains. Plus now plenty of parking

Maybe but as strong as a lot of his later stuff technically or from a production point of view but you can’t deny the raw talent evident then with the sense of what was yet to come over the years. A must have for any Bruce fans vinyl collection.

I''ve been waiting for Bruce to give me something as great as his mostly ignored second album, "The Wild, the Innocent & The E Street Shuffle." "Born to Run" is deservedly prestigious, with inspiring power pieces like "Jungleland." Though this album established Bruce''s rock ''n'' roll format for the future, for me it was a step down from the incredible genius creativity, the sophistication, the fusion of genres of rock, soul & jazz captured with "The Wild & Innocent."

With the Grammy nomination for "The Rising" and the immensity of the 9/11 American experience as its format, I anticipated that the musical splendor of that second album might again be acheived. "The Rising" is a very good work, but, alas, falls short in comparison.

"Wrecking Ball" was highly touted by Jimmy Fallon when Bruce appeared on his show. Jimmy knows good music. I am slowly coming to agree with him as this album continues to grow on me. It most certainly speaks to our current hard times of financial recession, unemployment, and the privileged aristocrat thieves who viciously continue to rape and plunder the world economy. The simplicity of the lyrics, with their bluntness, strong metaphorical imagery and subtle calls of hope and deliverence, work dynamically with the stark melodies to give us all reason to have heart and persevere for that better day. The album is so good that the fascinating "Swallowed Up" is presented as a bonus track on the "Special Edition."

But, for pure musical brilliance, "The Wild and Innocent" still stands alone. And probably always will. True classics never die.

I bought this album when it was released in 1973 still have my copy in vinyl ( in mint condition ) my original copy sounds so much better than this ( bought as a matter of interest ) does sound clearer but the top end sounds like white noise. My original copy sounds far more natural , if you what to buy this album go on ebay and buy a near mint copy from 1973. 1st pressing should have A1 B1 matrix in the run out grooves on side 1 and side 2 of the record , well worth it.......
